GIBSONS, BC, CANADA, March 11, 2010
/24-7PressRelease/ -- Sunshine Coast Tourism's presence at the BC Street area of the Richmond Ozone during the 2010 Olympics was a great success. They were pleased to learn that the original attendance target of 1,000 visitors per day was smashed almost immediately after opening on Feb. 12th. The actual attendance was upwards of 12,000 visitors per day, keeping the many volunteers who attended the Sunshine Coast display very busy indeed! "I wish to thank the volunteers who staffed the Sunshine Coast display at BC Street and also the artists from the Coast who gave the visitors a look at what the Coast has to offer in arts and culture. They greeted hundreds of visitors each day and told them the stories of the Coast - it is those people we expect to visit the Coast in the days to come," says Judy Spears, President of Sunshine Coast Tourism.
The Vancouver Province's Stuart Derdeyn said "Visit the BC Street exhibits showcasing the various regions of the province and marvel, once again, at the slice of global geography we call home." The Globe and Mail reported "Wander along BC Street, where you can experience seven regions of the province in a single afternoon." "This has been an incredible showcase of British Columbia to international guests and journalists, far surpassing our expectations," says Annette Antoniak of the South Okanagan-Similkameen Regional District.
BC Street immediately started to generate strong world-wide media attention from the outset of the Olympics. Renowned international news organizations such as RIA Novoski (Russia), Guangzhou Today (China), as well as dozens of the largest news outlets from across the United States including the Voice of America, the official external radio & television broadcasting service of the US government, covered the BC Street activities. BC Street was also featured on the official Olympic Broadcast Services (OBS) which supplies feature stories of all 60 official Olympic partner broadcasters around the world. In addition, there was extensive television (Shaw TV, Global TV, CityTV and FMA Entertainment Weekly) and internet (Lonely Planet, Good Life Vancouver, and several major blogs) coverage, all combining to provide BC Street, and our own Sunshine Coast, with incredible exposure to BC, North America and internationally.
The profile of the Sunshine Coast has been raised through this participation in BC Street, as well as the previous media event, The Taste of Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast, held the night before the Olympics began on Feb. 11th at Robson Square. The Olympics were an amazing venue from which to educate people from around the Lower Mainland and the rest of the world about all that the Sunshine Coast has to offer.
Sunshine Coast Tourism is the official destination marketing organization for the Sunshine Coast, whose mandate is to increase tourism visits to the area, helping to grow business both in the summer and the off-season. In 2009 the Sunshine Coast was the only region in the Vancouver Coast & Mountains area to increase tourist visits, with most other regions (including Vancouver and Whistler) seeing a decrease of between 8% and 11%. With the media attention received as a result of their presence at the two Olympics events, they expect to continue to see tourism grow in this region.
