CLEVELAND, OH, January 31, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- A survey conducted by Diabetes Daily, a leading online support network that helps people with diabetes live a better and healthier life, found that more than three quarters of people with diabetes (75.4 percent) expect to follow a dietary plan in 2010. This marks a significant increase from the number of people with diabetes who actually reported following a dietary plan in 2009. According to the survey results, 57.3 percent of respondents followed a dietary plan in 2009, including those recommended by their doctors or nutritionists.

"It is inspiring that more people with diabetes are planning to focus on nutrition in 2010," said David Edelman, Diabetes Daily president and co-founder and husband of a type 1 diabetic. "Establishing a plan for better nutrition management, particularly when it comes to diet, is an important step toward achieving a better life today."

According to the survey, of those who plan to follow a dietary plan in 2010, keeping their blood sugar in range (89.1 percent) and improving their health (70.6 percent) are the most important goals.

Maintaining a dietary plan, however, is no easy task. In 2009, 46.3 percent of respondents who began following a plan modified their diet slightly, and 33.1 percent were unable to maintain the diet's guidelines. The top two reasons respondents discontinued diets were because they were bored with food selection or the diet did not help them lose weight.

"It is particularly difficult for people with diabetes to maintain nutrition and follow a dietary plan successfully when they are bored with food selections," said Edelman. "That is precisely why Diabetes Daily has devoted considerable energy to the development of original recipes, meal plans and cookbooks that make nutrition and healthy eating delicious and exciting."

The Diabetes Daily survey was conducted online with 307 people with diabetes. The margin of error is approximately 6 percent.
