Teacher Joy M. Thompson Smith Helps Young People Reach their Goals

Joy Smith specializes in mathematics instruction for the New York City Department of Education



    NEW YORK, NY, May 20, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Joy M. Thompson Smith, Teacher for the New York City Department of Education, has been named a Cambridge Who's Who Professional of the Year in Education. While inclusion in the Cambridge Who's Who Registry is an honor, only a small selection of members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements leadership abilities, years of service, and the credentials they have provided in association with their Cambridge Who's Who membership.

Motivated by her twin passions for teaching children and learning, Ms. Smith ventured into the field of education 20 years ago. She specializes in mathematics instruction for the New York City Department of Education. As a teacher, she performs an assortment of classroom and administrative duties, such as teaching high-school mathematics and geometry, ensuring that students attend classes, and conducting final assessments. Ms. Joy Smith began her teaching career in Jamaica as a high school teacher and later as a teacher educator at Sam Sharpe Teachers' College, where she lectured in mathematics. Ms. Smith, who believes the necessary components for successful teaching are patience and passion, plans to continue educating teachers and assisting others in achieving their goals.

Ms. Smith received a master's degree in educational leadership in 1999 from Central Connecticut State University. She is a member of the MRC Learning Centre, American Federation of Teachers, United Federation of Teachers, and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Earlier this year, she was also named an Elite American Educator for her high level of achievement in the field of education. An exemplary student herself, she was honored with a scholarship in 1996 by the Ministry of Education in Jamaica.
