GREENSBORO, NC, June 19, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Teen Driving Solutions School, a North Carolina-based nonprofit dedicated to reducing the number of teen deaths from automobile crashes, has received a generous donation to start a scholarship program for 10 Triad youth and their parents to attend its signature Safe Teen Driver Course. The course is a two-day family-oriented, intensive driving program that provides teens with a mix of behind-the-wheel and mental training to improve vehicle control in a structured and safe setting, and incorporates parents and guardians with a licensed relationship expert who teaches key communication skills on how to best help new teenage drivers.
The new scholarship is thanks to a $5,000 donation from a generous Triad family, which wishes to remain anonymous, and recognizes the potential to save teen lives and keep families safe through the avoidance and recovery training and techniques taught at the Safe Teen Driver Course. The class normally costs $595 to attend, including one teen and a guardian, and the scholarship will cover $495 of the class fees per selected family. Recipients will be asked to cover the remaining $100 to ensure dedication and personal accountability to the success of the course teachings.
Those interested in applying for the scholarship can complete a short application online to be considered. To qualify for the scholarship, families must have a household income below $75,000 and be residents of the Triad. Teenagers chosen to participate in the program must be at least 15 years of age with a valid North Carolina learner's permit or license and a minimum of 20 hours supervised behind-the-wheel experience. Recipients will be selected from those who meet the criteria on a first-come, first-serve basis.
"Nearly 80 percent of all fatal teen crashes result from simple and preventable driver error," said Dan Wagner, founder of Teen Driving Solutions School. "We're so grateful for this generous donation that allows Triad families who may not have the financial means to attend one of our Safe Teen Driver Courses. We're thrilled to be able to reach these families and help ensure their teens arrive alive every time they drive."
The Safe Teen Driver Course teaches students the perils of distracted driving, helps improve decision-making skills and includes various intensive behind-the-wheel training exercises to learn physical control of a car in potentially life-threatening situations. The course focuses on avoidance first and recovery if necessary and includes training to prevent over correcting after dropping a tire off the pavement, skid prevention, braking exercises and much more.
Interested teens and guardians can apply online beginning June 17. For more information on the Safe Teen Driver course or to apply for the scholarship, visit http://www.teendrivingsolutions.org/triad-scholarship/.
