Cambridge Who’s Who is an exclusive membership organization that recognizes and empowers executives, professionals and entrepreneurs throughout the world.
RENO, NV, June 4, 2009 /Cambridge Who's Who/ -- Dr. Terence K. Smith, Professor for the Department of Physiology & Cell Biology of the University of Nevada School of Medicine, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in all aspects of medical research and education.

Dr. Smith has 25 years of experience in medicine. He was trained as both a physicist and a neuroscientist. In addition to his teaching duties, Dr. Smith is an active researcher, supervising a laboratory that is aimed at determining how the enteric nervous system (ENS or Little Brain) regulates the pacemaker networks involved in generating the movements of the digestive tract. Recently, his team has discovered an important neural reflex in the large bowel that underlies colonic storage (accommodation) and slow transit of fecal material. This was a considerable scientific achievement, since the last intrinsic reflex (peristaltic reflex) in the bowel was discovered over 100 years ago by Bayliss & Starling (1899). Therefore, the ENS is capable of controlling both propulsion and storage. He attributes his success to hard work, enthusiasm and imagination, and avoiding school to spend time in nature in his younger years.

Originally from the UK, Dr. Smith received his Ph.D. in 1984 from Monash University in Melbourne. He is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association, the American Motility Society and the Physiological Society in England. In 2003, he was honored with a Janssen Prize for Basic Research.
