Thai Tourism Resilient Despite Bangkok Protests, Reports Skyscanner

EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND, May 01, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Despite the standing Travel Alert from the US Department of State, which is currently advising against non-essential travel to Bangkok, cheap airfare search engine, www.Skyscanner.com, can report that tourists have not been dissuaded from flying to the Thai capital for their summer holidays. Skyscanner's data revealed this week that there has been no reduction in US and Canadian-based searches for flights to Bangkok for travel in June, July and August 2010.

Scot Carlson, Skyscanner Country Manager for the USA and Canada, commented: "We have not seen any significant drop in interest for summer travel to Thailand since the Bangkok protests began although I suspect that this may be because many travelers believe the unrest will be over by summer. However, I haven't seen this ban take much precedence in the news in North America so some travelers may simply be unaware of the unrest.

"Whatever the reason, flight search volumes to Bangkok have remained consistent with other popular, East-Asian searches such as flights to Hong Kong, for example."

Back in December 2008, Skyscanner reported that there were no major drops in flight searches to Bangkok following the closure of its two main airports during a period of civil unrest.

"Typically, Skyscanner tends to see a short term drop in flight searches to areas affected by civil unrest or natural disasters, but we see recovery come quickly as long as the incidents aren't prolonged", added Carlson. We would have seen a noticeable-drop in search volume, as many Skyscanner users search our site for cheap airfare to Bangkok as a main destination for further travel to East Asia."
