IRVINE, CA, May 31, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Alzheimer's Association, Orange County Chapter in collaboration with Coastal Communities Hospital, Orange County Office on Aging, Amistad Medical Clinics, ATP Clinical Research, Angel Guardians Homes, Orange County High School of Arts and the Office of the Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez will conduct the second "Latino Caregivers Recognition Day" community event on Saturday, June 04, 2011 at Coastal Communities Hospital located in Santa Ana.

In California, Latinos are the second largest population group and are fast becoming the state's majority ethnic group. Similar to national trends, in California the number of Latinos living with Alzheimer's disease will triple between 2008 and 2030. The Alzheimer's Association continues to raise awareness of the increasingly alarming reality of dementia among Hispanics/Latinos.

For the past 10 years, the Alzheimer's Association Latino Support Group has been meeting monthly at Coastal Communities Hospital. Note that groups for ethnic diverse caregivers of Alzheimer's disease are practically nonexistent. "The commitment to family care giving is strength in the Latino community. But families need information; help and support to sustain their role as carers and to assure that the person with dementia is getting the necessary medical care that may help lessen the burden of the disease," said Norma Castellano, with the Alzheimer's Association.

Given the number of Latino family members coping with this disease is increasing; culturally relevant services and interventions are needed for Latino caregivers and family members to address their needs and help overcome some of the challenges that individuals and families affected by Alzheimer's experience.

For this reason, the concept of a "Latino Caregivers Recognition Day" event came to fruition. "It is important that we recognize the caregivers who provide their demonstrated love, patience and dedication for their loved ones," said Alzheimer's Association President & CEO Jim McAleer.

Forty to sixty caregivers who participate in the Alzheimer's Association Latino support group will receive recognition certificates from the Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez In addition, a special presentation will be made by a guest speaker; Dr. Gustavo Alva.

For further information regarding the upcoming event, please contact Norma Castellano, Multicultural Coordinator, and Alzheimer's Association at 949.757-3755.
