RALEIGH, NC, September 12, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Carolina Designer Craftsmen Guild (http://www.carolinadesignercraftsmen.com/) has announced that Mary Ann Scherr, among others, will be a guest presenter on Sunday, Nov. 25 at the 43rd Annual Fine Designer Crafts Show held on the North Carolina State Fairgrounds in Raleigh during Thanksgiving weekend. The Fine Designer Crafts Show, a North Carolina tradition since 1970, features the work of over 100 juried fine craft artists, including handmade pottery, jewelry, glass, metal, wood, wearable art and more.
Scherr has been involved in design since 1945 and her career ranges from automobile to toy design and from fashion design to book illustration. As a goldsmith, Scherr pioneered the use of exotic metals as media for the use of personal adornment and small scale objects. She is internationally recognized for her unique works and for the development of electronic body-monitors, jewelry equipped with sensitive tracking devices that can perform medical chores such as monitoring heartbeat, blood pressure, or warning an asthmatic wearer of dangerous air pollutants.
Scherr and her work have appeared at the White House, on CBS with Dan Rather, NBC's "Today Show", ABC's "Good Morning America," and the Johnny Carson show, among others. She has been featured in publications such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, People Magazine, Connoisseur, Fortune, Time, House and Garden, among others. Her art works are included in over 130 publications and she has exhibited her work in over 250 galleries, museums, hotels, businesses and medical facilities throughout the world including in Moscow, London, Tokyo, Korea, Canada, Guyana, Trinidad and Venezuela. Some of her most well-known clients include the late Duke of Windsor, Erma Bombeck, Joan and Walter Mondale, Liz Claiborne, Perry Ellis, Andy Warhol, and Chelsea Clinton. Now in her early 90s, Scherr is a metals professor at North Carolina State University's Craft Center.
"We are honored to have Mary Ann Scherr as a guest presenter at the 43rd Annual Fine Designer Crafts Show," said Elizabeth Lyne, president of the Carolina Designer Craftsmen Guild. "Her achievements in artistry and craftsmanship are outstanding and we hope that she can convey her phenomenal expertise to inspire the artists in attendance this year."
