/24-7PressRelease/ - FEDERAL WAY, WA, June 29, 2006 - The Coastal Challenge is more than just a race, it's a philosophy. In Costa Rica, where the race is held, pura vida means "pure life." That's what The Coastal Challenge is about: purifying your body and soul through six days of "one of the longest, toughest and most memorable running events you will ever embark upon." Race organizers say "We are confident that competitors, organization staff and locals will be forever transformed and enriched by this unprecedented communal approach to expedition length racing."

This year's race is the Route of Fire, a grueling course that winds its way through the Northwestern region of Costa Rica all the way to the Nicaraguan border. But don't be too intimidated. The race organizers encourage participants to "Face your fears—conditions will be tough but you can walk the 18 mile +/- stages each day if necessary and still make the cutoffs. Aid stations will also be placed on course for each stage. Come alone, in pairs or as a group. Race at your own individual pace and reunite at the end of each day."

Also new this year is a second race category. The original race, the Expedition Run category, "will compete the entire 230-km course, while an Adventure Run category will follow a shortened version traveling half the distance on longer days (anything over 35 km) and two-thirds on the shorter days. This year, in an effort to keep things interesting, one day will be a relatively short sprint for everyone, of no more than 13 km, while another day will be an ultra run day for those in the Expedition Run category."

"Although simple in concept, the race will prove to be extremely difficult in terms of distance, terrain and the tropical climate. The heat and sun will take their toll and you may be severely tested at times. All that said, if you enjoy long distance running or multi-sport competitions, The Coastal Challenge should prove the most affordable, hassle free and personally rewarding event you can mark on your 2007 race calendar."
