In this nine-week Bible study, Anne Fortenberry, who has been a missionary in three Muslim countries for nearly 10 years, delves into the often-controversial writings of James, the half-brother of Jesus and a leader of the early Christian church. Because turning your faith into action can be difficult, Fortenberry designed the study to encourage and guide Christians to put their faith into action as she examines the tests of faith, the seven characteristics of faith, and the two victories of faith. Each daily lesson, which includes a Heart Truth designed to encourage Scripture memorization, questions for introspection, Fortenberry's thoughts, and dedicated space for the reader's thoughts, is purported to strengthen the reader's faith, to prepare the reader to meet life's challenges, and to emphasize God's presence in the reader's life.
The Book of James, which often creates discussion because of its focus on "works" - whereas other Scripture focuses on "faith" - is a letter written approximately in AD 47 to Jewish believers to teach right Christian behavior. In her study, Fortenberry includes topics from the Book of James such as the difference between tests and temptation, excuses for sin, the power of prayer, the problem of anger, Satan's plans versus God's power, the danger of wealth, and the process of waiting on God.
Anne Fortenberry has served as a Southern Baptist missionary, a university lecturer and division chair, and a health-care consultant. She holds a doctor of nursing science degree from the Louisiana State University Medical Center School of Nursing, a master of science from the University of Southern Mississippi, and a bachelor of science from Mississippi College. She and her husband, Archie, are parents of three grown children.
