/24-7PressRelease/ - JACKSONVILLE, FL, June 26, 2008 - The Infertility Counseling Center of Jacksonville is now accepting registrations for its first session of the Harvard Medical School's Mind/Body Infertility Program beginning in July 2008. This fertility wellness program is the only one of its kind in Northeast Florida and South Georgia.
The Mind/Body Program for Infertility is an educational wellness program dedicated to helping women cope with infertility and increase their chance of pregnancy by reducing the damaging effects of chronic physical and emotional stress. This 10-week program empowers women with the coping skills necessary to regain control of their bodies, emotions and lives through relaxation training, cognitive therapy, marital communication skills, group support and yoga.
Infertility affects 7.3 million people in the United States. This figure represents 12 percent of women of childbearing age, or 1 in 8 couples. Studies have shown that infertile women are significantly more psychologically distressed than their fertile counterparts, with depression and anxiety levels equivalent to women with heart disease, terminal cancer and HIV positive status. This severe distress has been clinically proven to adversely affect pregnancy rates.
The Mind/Body Program for Infertility has been scientifically proven to not only reduce the emotional and physical symptoms of psychological distress such as depression, anxiety, hostility, fatigue, headaches, insomnia and abdominal pain, but these interventions also have been proven to increase pregnancy. Several studies have shown that 45 to 55 percent of women who participate in mind/body fertility programs have had a viable pregnancy within a year of program completion.
"Many times there is little attention given to the amount of emotional pain and stress involved with infertility and recurring pregnancy loss," said Executive Director and Founder, Dustyn Williams. "It can be an all-consuming heartbreak that leaves women feeling depressed, isolated, angry and hopeless. But I am here to tell them that they do not have to feel that way as they navigate the path of infertility. It all starts with learning how to think and react differently to stress."
