BROOKLYN, NY, June 02, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Jerusalem Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (JSPCA) has been named the June 2011 beneficiary for Rescue Chocolate, the kosher chocolate company which donates 100% of its profits to various animal rescue organizations.

JSPCA is older than the modern state of Israel, having been founded during the British Mandate period. It operates the only animal shelter in Jerusalem, serving areas as far away as Gush Etzion, Hebron, Beit Shemesh, Beit She'an and large portions of the West Bank.

According to shelter volunteer Lev Abramov, "We never refuse an animal if it is hurt, on the street, or in a dangerous situation. Our shelter is a rescue shelter. Most animals that are not adopted live out their natural lives with us. That is why our shelter is generally overcrowded and often filled beyond its capacity. At any given time we house up to 300 dogs and 100 cats."

The objectives of the group include reducing the pet overpopulation problem by encouraging people to spay/neuter their dogs and cats, educating the public on responsible pet care, preventing violence against animals, and finding good homes for animals in need of adoption.

The donation from Rescue Chocolate will help to fund all of those projects as well as improvements at the shelter, including new heating upgrades and a new covered dog run. The chocolate company is headquartered in Brooklyn, New York, and most of its sales take place in the United States. However, according to Rescue Chocolate founder Sarah Gross, there have been other international beneficiaries in the past.

"There was a catastrophic earthquake in Haiti during the first month of our operations, in January 2010. So our first beneficiary was a coalition of animal rescue groups in Haiti," Gross said. Other beneficiaries have included United Animal Nations, Farm Sanctuary, and In Defense of Animals.

In addition to carrying the Kosher OK symbol, Rescue Chocolate's bars and truffles are vegan, handcrafted, and packaged in eco-friendly materials. Each product is named after an issue important in the animal rescue world. For example, there are chocolate bars called Peanut Butter Pit Bull, Pick Me Pepper, Foster-iffic Peppermint, The Fix, and Mission Feral Fig.
