The New York International School Appoints Shelley Borror Jackson as Head of School

Manhattan's newest Upper East Side school opening in 2015 announces highly credentialed head of school to lead the Nursery through 8th Grade institution's opening.



    NEW YORK, NY, December 17, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The New York International School has appointed Shelley Borror Jackson as its founding head of school. The school, established by one of the world's leading educational organizations with 10 top schools in America, Europe and Asia, offered the prestigious position to a respected US educator with over 30 years of varied experience in the field.

Jackson has been the Head of School for The Bement School in Deerfield, MA, since 1999 and has cultivated an academically diverse, international, and multi-cultural student body. She received her B.A. in English from Wheaton College (MA), her M.A. in English from The Ohio State University, and her C.A.S. in Literacy from the University of Maine in 1999 where she also was an adjunct professor. Jackson was awarded a Klingenstein Fellowship at Teachers College of Columbia University in 2010. She has been widely published on literacy issues. Jackson has been a director for the Association of Independent Schools of New England and currently serves on its accreditation committee. She has been president of the Junior Boarding Schools Association, where she was the only female head leading a JBSA school in the past sixteen years.

Jackson's tenure in each of the schools she has led has been characterized by her ability to create community among her varied constituents, to oversee child-centered decisions, to forge strong relationships, and to use current research to inform practice and pedagogy. Her colleagues praise her energy, her scholarship, her communication skills, and her compassion for those she serves. The New York International School (NYIS) is the new PreK-8 independent, coeducational, and non-denominational school providing a global education to American and international students in New York. The school's curriculum features an innovative dual language immersion program in either Spanish or Mandarin Chinese. NYIS will open progressively in 2015 (ages 2-5) and 2016 (ages 6-9), expanding thereafter up to grade 8 (age 13). The school is already accepting applications for both Preschool and Lower School. The campus is located on the Upper East Side at 4 East 90th Street, by Central Park and 5th Avenue's Museum Mile. The building belongs to the Church of the Heavenly Rest and is occupied by Trevor Day School until July 1st of 2015.
