The Plato Group Asks, "Is Your Language Turning Your Customers Off?"

Direct sales and marketing firm The Plato Group investigates into some of the most common words used in the marketing industry that have actually been proven to turn customers away rather than entice them.

MIAMI, FL, June 27, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Plato Group is investigating further into consumer trends and behaviors this week and have reviewed some of the key words that marketers use that are actually having a negative impact on customers.

The words were highlighted in a recent article on inc.com ('5 words customers hate (and what to say instead)', published on 20th April 2016) and the firm has analysed why they are turning customers off.

1. "Teach"
Customers hate it because 'teach' conjures an image of a school teacher droning on about something that's not very interesting. The word 'share' works better because it implies that what a sales professional has to say is valuable enough to consider keeping to themselves.

2. "Learn"
Customers dislike the term 'learn' because learning something takes time and energy, both of which are in short supply in the business world. The word 'discovering' works better because discovering something is usually a happy accident that doesn't require much effort.

3. "Details"
'Details' by definition, are unimportant and trivial so customers are usually disinterested. Why would anybody be interested in them? The word 'insights' works better because they are unique and valuable. How could anyone not want more of them?

4. "Case Study"
Customers hate it because 'case studies' is academia-talk and reeks of tedium. The word 'study' implies time and effort. The word 'case' implies legal action. The word 'storytelling' works better because it is what makes us human. Everyone likes hearing a story with a beginning, middle and happy ending.

5. "Guarantee"
Customers despise the term 'guarantee' as it has been "fine print" abused for so many years that it is no longer trusted. The word 'Refund' works better because it is an actual promise of what customers can expect if they're not satisfied.
