/24-7PressRelease/ -- The South Georgia Peanuts are returning to Albany, GA. Sort of.
On April 5, 2009, the Peanuts will be featured on Fox-31 in "Playing for Peanuts." "Playing for Peanuts" is a 10-episode TV series that chronicled the Peanuts during the 2007 season.
"It has always been important for me to get this show on the air in Albany," explains producer/director John Fitzgerald. "The fans in Albany have been burned by several teams and leagues in the last ten years and they didn't deserve to have another team leave the city after one season."
The South Coast League and the South Georgia Peanuts folded after the 2007 season. Despite claims that the league would return in 2009, there have been no indications that the Peanuts will ever play again.
The April 5 episode is the only currently scheduled broadcast, but Fitzgerald hopes it leads to additional broadcasts in the future.
"I had to buy airtime to get this show on TV in Albany," explains Fitzgerald. "If there is a good response, it will justify purchasing more airtime to broadcast additional episodes. The episode's commercial breaks will be used to promote the show's new website - SouthGeorgiaPeanuts.net - where fans can watch unreleased footage that didn't make it into the show or the DVD. I'm hoping enough people visit the website so I can get more episodes on the air."
In addition to focusing on the lives and motivations of professional baseball players, "Playing for Peanuts" also gives viewers a front row seat to the launch and subsequent disintegration of the South Coast League.
"I realize alot of fans don't remember the Peanuts fondly - or at all," continues Fitzgerald. "But I think when fans see what was really happening, they'll realize how special that team was. There were some really great people involved with the team - from the front office to the playing field. The league was obviously mismanaged from the get-go, but I hope fans don't hold that against the team or the TV series."
