EVERGREEN, CO, October 18, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- It's a busy day for The Swinden Group as they are advising their clients of two tropical cyclones in the Pacific Ocean that may affect Luzon, Philippines in the west and Baja California in the east by mid-week next week.

Typhoon Lupit in the Western Pacific

Typhoon Lupit is located approximately 300 miles northwest of Yap Island and is tracking westward while continuing to strengthen. Currently a category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale of 1 to 5, Lupit could strengthen to a category 4 storm prior to threatening Luzon, Philippines.

"Computer models has the storm tracking towards Luzon, Philippines next week and could come dangerously close or even strike Luzon by mid-week," explains Matthew Swinden, President of the Swinden Group. The Swinden Group provides weather risk management services to organizations and individuals though their Severe Weather Advisories.

"If Lupit even brushes by Luzon, even without making a direct landfall, the heavy rains that a tropical cyclone produces may cause additional damaging flooding to an already damaged Luzon," says Swinden.

Recently Typhoon Parma caused widespread damage and caused the deaths to hundreds to Luzon region.

Tropical Storm Rick soon to become Hurricane Rick off the coast of Mexico

Newly formed Tropical Storm Rick, off the coast of Mexico, is quickly intensifying and could become a hurricane later today and threaten Baja California next week. Interests in Baja should monitor the progress of this storm. Travelers in or going to Baja next week, may want to have a Plan B prepared.

The National Hurricane Center reports that at 200 am PDT, 0900 UTC, the center of Tropical Storm Rick was located 315 miles south-southeast of Acapulco Mexico. Rick is moving toward the west-northwest near 9 mph. This general motion is expected to continue for the next couple of days with a slight increase in forward speed by Saturday.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 65 mph with higher gusts. Additional strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours and Rick is expected to become a hurricane later today. Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 60 miles from the center.

"We are advising interests in Baja to monitor the progress of this storm. Travelers in or going to Baja next week, may want to have a Plan B prepared," says Swinden. "Last month Hurricane Jimena drenched Baja with flooding rains. This could be a repeat performance."
