THE TRUTH ABOUT THE ROLE OF METABOLISM IN OBESITY AND LOSING WEIGHT
Hypnotherapist author argues that obesity is NOT your metabolism's fault!

/24-7PressRelease/ - DIAMOND BAR, CA, January 26, 2008 -- According to the author of "Dream Psycles - A New Awakening in Hypnosis!" obesity is epidemic in America. And when you ask Americans why it is that they are fat, most will chime in with the same lame answer: "It's my metabolism's fault."

In the book, the author states that there is some validity to the argument that metabolism plays a role in weight problems. Researchers know very well how your system tends to maintain its state of weight. Your system maintains a set-point of the caloric intake it thinks your body requires on a daily basis, and that is the amount you will tend to consume.

But no matter what you may read in the papers, it is eating habits and lifestyle that causes the metabolism to run amok in obese people, not the other way around. And in order to lose weight, your metabolism has to burn more calories than you consume. Among the various metabolisms that burn these calories, your basal metabolism rate (BMR) burns the most, approximately 72-75 percent. Basal metabolism is the rate that your body burns calories to maintain those physiological processes that keep you alive, such as respiration, heartbeat, and the maintenance of your body temperature, and all of these functions are controlled by the hypothalamus region in your brain.

Researchers now know that the hypothalamus is perhaps the most significant structure of the brain with regard to hypnosis, because we can to some extent gain control of the functions performed by this structure using hypnosis. In this respect, the hypothalamus is similar to a thermostat. Remarkably, the hypothalamus sets your BMR to burn calories at a rate that is directly related to your caloric intake. In other words, the higher your caloric intake, the higher your basal metabolism rate will be. If you lower your intake, your basal metabolism slows down as well.

What is surprising is the degree to which this rate will change. If you were to suddenly increase your daily caloric consumption by 10 percent, your BMR might increase its rate by 12 to 15 percent in an attempt to maintain your weight at its established set-point. Since your BMR does not burn 100 percent of the calories you consume, you would still gain weight, but if you exercised more with the increased food intake, that weight would be in the form of muscle.

Now consider the reverse. If you reduce the amount of food you eat by 10 percent, your BMR will reduce its rate by approximately 12 to 15 percent in an effort to conserve fat stores to protect against famine. So as you diet, your body sabotages your efforts by reducing the rate at which it burns calories! In addition to this, because you are consuming (and burning) fewer calories, you have less energy to begin with. Exercise becomes a real struggle, and as you endure this struggle your body starves even more for nourishment. In the end, the struggle becomes so great that you eventually abandon your diet, and your body goes into hyper-drive to increase its store of fat in preparation for the next famine. You actually end up heavier (often 20% heavier) than when you started your diet, and this psycle is commonly referred to as the rubber-band effect of dieting.

There are ways to beat this psycle, though. Research has shown that using hypnosis, it is possible to directly access and alter the set points in the hypothalamus gland that control not only your desire to eat, but the rate at which your body will burn calories as well! Since your physical body weight set-point is regulated by an endocrine gland in the lateral hypothalamus, there are at least several ways to change this set-point, and a good hypnotherapist will design an induction plan that will attack these set points on several fronts. The induction would be scripted to address desired changes in exercise, lifestyle, and dietary habits as a collective whole, but the real target of change is always the set-point in the subconscious mind that causes overeating. This set-point can be changed directly through the acceptance of a post-hypnotic suggestion that the individual does have control over his or her own weight, after all.

The best way to lose weight is gradually, over a long period of time, through orchestrated changes in your lifestyle. This is preferable to crash diets, not only because it is a lifestyle change rather than a simple diet, but also because it avoids the rubber band effect that frequently follows sudden weight loss. You cannot lose weight - and keep it off - through crash diets. The only way to lose weight and keep it off is to wake up your self denial, change your eating habits, and establish a new set-point to match your desired, ideal self-image. Once you reach your ideal body weight, you must maintain it through a healthy balance of diet and exercise that burns exactly as many calories as you consume.
