SAN ANTONIO, TX, September 03, 2009
/24-7PressRelease/ -- WHAT:
The San Antonio Theatre Coalition (SATCO) invites audiences to join San Antonio's theatre community for its sixth annual 24-hour theatre making event, TheatreASAP.
WHEN:
Kickoff: Friday, September 11, 2009, 7:30 pm
Premiere: Saturday, September 12. 2009, 8:00 pm
WHERE:
Stieren Theatre
Trinity University Campus
One Trinity Place
San Antonio, Texas 78212
DETAILS:
The excitement of TheatreASAP begins on Friday, September 11, as local playwrights meet to draw props, cast lists, and San Antonio-related lines of dialogue. Once they have chosen their elements, they have only twelve hours to incorporate them into a one-act play.
The finished scripts will be given to teams of actors and directors on Saturday, September 12. From there, the teams must memorize, rehearse, and stage their plays within twelve hours. The finished products will premiere at 8pm that night.
Since it began in 2004, TheatreASAP has met with enthusiasm from audiences and critics; Deborah Martin of the San Antonio Express-News has called the event a "first-rate showcase" and "a worthy addition" to the San Antonio arts scene.
Vincent Hardy, a two-time director for TheatreASAP, says, "It's great to see the creativity that has to happen spontaneously, how interesting things emerge out of that quick, snappy process. When you're racing to make that 8:00 deadline, all the work becomes an act of instinct." "It's a challenge for everyone involved," adds Chris Champlin, 2009 chairperson of TheatreASAP, "and it's also very exciting. Because you don't know what you'll have to work with until you draw those elements on Friday night, you know you're going to see something that you haven't seen before, something that no one has seen before. Every year it's a new experience, and the best part is getting to share that with the audience. For regular theatre-goers and people who have never seen a play before, it's a great way to keep theatre alive in San Antonio."
