They're Such Good "Sportz"
Comedy Troupe Gets Expansion Team In S.A.

SAN ANTONIO, TX, November 26, 2008 /24-7PressRelease/ -- ComedySportz has found a new home, as the National Comedy Theater (NCT) of San Antonio has joined the premier improvisation group.

For the San Antonio team, joining the ComedySportz league is a kind of homecoming. "NCT came out of ComedySportz," explains Les McGehee, a San Antonio native and 20-year veteran of both troupes. "We developed our whole concept of team improv, interactive comedy, through ComedySportz, so this really won't be all that different from the NCT shows, except that now we're professionals - not that we weren't professionals before, but now we have these cool uniforms to show for it."

For Jason Lee Boyson, McGehee's teammate and fellow NCT veteran, the uniforms fit, in more ways than one. "If there's one thing I've learned from working with Les and NCT," he says, "it's that improv is a full-contact sport. And even when you're not up there onstage, you're still in the game. You're calling all the plays, and if you screw up, you just might get called for the foul. You're not just watching us be funny, you're giving us the material to be funny ... or unfunny. It can get pretty intense." But even at its most intense, the San Antonio team has met with an enthusiastic response from fans and critics, with the University of Texas at San Antonio newspaper, The Paisano, saying, "Is it as good as Saturday Night Live, or even Second City? No. It's way better."

Though the name has changed, ComedySportz promises the same family-friendly humor fans have come to expect from NCT, as teams compete for laughs in a series of games built on suggestions from the audience, with a "referee" handing out points and fouls - including the dreaded "Brown Bag Foul" for offensive content - based on the audience's response. "There's something for everyone," says Boyson, "and the more you contribute to the show, the more you'll enjoy it."

ComedySportz San Antonio performs every Friday night, at 7:30PM, at The Overtime Theater (1216 West Avenue, between Olmos and Hildebrand), , which was recently named "Best Theater Troupe" in 210SA magazine's 2008 Buzz Awards, and which previously hosted San Antonio's NCT troupe.

On Wednesday, December 31, the team will present two special New Year's Eve shows at The Overtime Theater. "We're doing one show at 7:30PM, for the Brazilian New Year," explains John Poole, the theater's director, "and then, just in case you missed it the first time, we're going to have another show at 10PM for our time zone. So come to The Overtime and ring in 2009 with us - twice!"

Tickets are only $8; for more information, please call 210.380.0326 or visit http://www.theovertimetheater.net or http://www.myspace.com/the_overtime_theater.
