Dr. Wilson served the majority of his professional career from 1965 to 2013 as a computer expert, mission simulator, and a high-energy theoretical physicist with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in Houston. Besides training astronauts for the Apollo Moon program, he has been a renowned expert in gravity and relativity, and has worked on everything from research in grand unified field theory to discovering the classical uncertainty principle and solving the cosmological constant problem. Dr. Wilson also originated the idea of using the olive branch for the Apollo 11 mission patch to symbolize mankind's peaceful first landing on the Moon, which has since been represented on the Susan B. Anthony and Eisenhower dollars.
Born in Alpine, Texas in 1942 to Homer Marvin and Ogarita Bailey Wilson, Dr. Wilson studied at Rice University to earn a Bachelor of Arts in 1964 and a Bachelor of Science in 1965. He was honored early on with a 1964 Hugo Gernsback Award by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Fresh from Rice University, Dr. Wilson was brought in to NASA, where he trained astronauts in simulations of gravity in space. From 1969 to 1976, he was granted a NASA fellowship to pursue his doctorate at Rice in particle physics. Then he moved on to devote his time to high-energy theoretical physics.
While at NASA, Dr. Wilson contributed to the design of NASA's proposed lunar base, and was the architect of the manual Saturn takeover for the Apollo Moon program. He holds a number of patents in the physics field, and his research has explored the subjects of relativistic quantum field theory, quantum chromodynamics, quantum probability theory, supergravity, quantum cosmology, astrophysics, deep inelastic scattering, gravitational radiation, neutrino astronomy, and neutrino tomography. Dr. Wilson is the author of three books and numerous articles for professional journals. He is affiliated with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (Life), the American Nuclear Society, the American Association of Physicists in Medicine, the New York Academy of Sciences, and the American Physical Society.
For many years of support in the pioneering of space and for his dedication to peering into the workings of the universe, Dr. Wilson was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World. He married Joyce Ann Krevosky in 1978, with whom he had two children, Kenneth Edward Byron and Bailey Elizabeth Victoria.
