Thomas Spaulding Willard, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Willard has served as an English language educator with the University of Arizona for more than 35 years.

A recognized expert in Western esotericism, Shakespeare, and literature of the Bible, Dr. Willard has served as an English language educator with the University of Arizona for more than 35 years. A dedicated teacher, writer and researcher, Dr. Willard has received grants from a variety of institutions, including Arizona Regents Reaching Out, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the Canadian Embassy, and the Canadian Department of External Affairs. He was made a full professor of English and Religious Studies at the University of Arizona in 2015.

Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Willard has authored and co-authored numerous written works, including book chapters in "Theorien vom Ursprung der Sprache," " Literature and Medicine During the 18th Century," "La Linguistique entre mythe et histore," "Ésotérisme, gnoses & imaginaire symbolique," "The Changing Face of Ovid," "Northrop Frye: New Directions from Old," and "Laughter in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Times." He is also the editor of "Jean D'Espagnet's Summary of Physics Restored," co-editor of "Visionary Poetics," and for 20 years was a book review editor of "Cauda Pavonis: Studies in Hermeticism."

Prior to pursuing a career in English education, Dr. Willard attended The George Washington University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1967 and Master of Arts in 1970. Upon completing a PhD at the University of Toronto in 1978, he accepted a position as an assistant professor of English with the University of Arizona. During the next few decades, Dr. Willard rose through the ranks as an associate and full professor of English and faculty associate to the provost for undergraduate education.

A committed educator, Dr. Willard has served as a faculty mentor with the Arizona Assistance Scholarship Program since 2010. He is the former president of the Phi Beta Kappa chapter at the University of Arizona, as well as a former advisor for the Honors College and the SALT Center at the University of Arizona, while serving as a member of the Undergraduate Council and the NCA Self-Study Committee. In an effort to remain active and engaged in the field of English education, Dr. Willard maintains involvement with numerous professional organizations, including the Modern Language Association and European Society for the Study of Western Esotericism. He was previously involved with the Arizona English Articulation Task Force, Arizona Regents Committee on Learner-Centered Education and Reading Seed. In addition, he has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the West, and Directory of American Scholars. With his late wife Marilyn (d. 2009), he is the father of two sons, Christopher (b. 1978) and Gregory (b. 1980).
