First, identify your needs. Are you doing a lot of highway driving, or more urban commuting? If you tend to drive at higher speeds, it may make sense to look at performance snow tires. If not, you can likely avoid the premium prices associated with performance snow tires. Secondly, you'll want to take into account your weather conditions. Do you tend to get more slush? Strictly snow? Ice? A combination of the above? Different types of snow tires perform better for these differing conditions. If you deal more with icy conditions, it will most likely make sense to look at studded tires. These provide maximum traction in icy conditions, but will not really provide better performance in strictly snowy conditions.
Make sure when ordering your new tires online or at a store, that you pick your seller's brain on topics such as tread design, tread compound and whether or not the tires you're looking at are designated by the Rubber Manufacturers Association as meeting the severe snow standard.
