TMS Symposium Resident-in-Training Scholarship Program Awarded to Jose Feliberti, a Third Year Resident from Kaweah Delta Training Program in Visalia CA

Residents were asked about what drove their interest in TMS and responses showed a strong understanding of the burgeoning promise for TMS, one of the fastest growing therapies in Psychiatry.

I am interested in TMS because of its capacity to be used as an investigational tool for neural network mapping as well as a therapeutic tool for neural network modulation.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, July 22, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- TMS Health Solutions announced today that the recipient for their Resident-in-Training scholarship program had been chosen and the chosen resident was awarded a full scholarship tuition for the Advanced Hands-On TMS Symposium. The scholarship program attracted responses from third- and fourth- year residents from across the country, and a panel reviewed each application. "We were not surprised to find such interest and passion about attending the yearly symposium with hands-on training," said Karl Lanocha, Director of Education for TMS Health Solutions and Course Chair for the Advanced Symposium. "However, we were so inspired by the applications that we decided to select four additional residents to receive a special 25% sponsorship of tuition cost."

Residents were asked about what drove their interest in TMS. Given the expected expansion of FDA label with Phase III Clinical Trials for Adolescent Depression, Bipolar Depression, OCD, PTSD and Mild Alzheimer's Dementia, applying residents' responses showed a strong understanding of the burgeoning promise for TMS, one of the fastest growing therapies in Psychiatry. One applicant, Joseph Taylor, wrote, "I am interested in TMS because of its capacity to be used as an investigational tool for neural network mapping as well as a therapeutic tool for neural network modulation."

Another applicant, Richard Heekin, expounded, "I believe we are now on the leading edge of a third paradigm shift in psychiatry, where TMS and other neuromodulatory therapies will create new possibilities for the treatment of psychiatric and neurological illness in a more more precise and targeted way, with far fewer side effects." Both Taylor and Heekin, along with applicants Kathleen Burns and Jugjin Kim, were chosen to receive a 25% sponsorship (a $500 value) of the tuition cost.

The full scholarship (a $1,995 value) was awarded to Jose Feliberti, a third year resident from Kaweah Delta training program in Visalia CA, who showed great enthusiasm for learning about Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). "(TMS is a) new innovation intervention which is non-invasive," he wrote. "(I'm) interested in incorporating it into my future practice and having a new "tool" in my treatment armamentarium." Feliberti described his ideal psychiatry practice as one using innovation with a strong commitment to procedure-based medicine.

With only a few seats left, the upcoming Advanced Hands-On TMS Symposium will include hands-on training and content around clinical management of TMS. The faculty includes teaching credentials from universities and facilities such as Duke, Stanford, the Mayo Clinic, Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and UCLA. It will be held in San Francisco from September 7th- September 10th, and over 20 CME credits can be earned by participants.

About TMS Therapy
Cleared by the FDA in 2008, TMS is a drug-free, non-invasive therapy for patients who suffer from treatment-resistant depression. It is administered in a physician's office in an outpatient setting. By using an MRI-strength magnetic field to stimulate the prefrontal cortex of the brain, the core symptoms of major depression can be relieved. Unlike antidepressants or Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), patients undergoing TMS therapy experience minimal side effects.
