/24-7PressRelease/ - TOMS RIVER, NJ, April 25, 2008 - One athlete made his name in Major League Baseball as a three-time all star. One athlete wowed college football fans with his speed and moves before his talent took him to the NFL. Now each will use their skills and experience as they host a sports instruction camp to teach young athletes how to excel as they have.
Former Phillies catcher Darren Dutch Daulton and St. Louis Rams Fullback Brian Leonard have announced the opening of registration for the youth sports camps that bear their name. In partnership with Toms River-based Elite Camp Services, the Darren Daulton Baseball Camp will take place at Stockton State College in Pomona, New Jersey from August 3 to 7, and the Brian Leonard Football Camp will be at the College of New Jersey in Ewing, New Jersey from July 16 to 20. Daulton will also host the Darren Daulton Baseball Talent Showcase at FirstEnergy Ballpark in Lakewood on August 2 and 3.
"We are honored to partner with these exemplary athletes in creating camps where young people will hone the skills that they can use to succeed," said Shawn Kennish, President of Elite Camp Services. "In Camp, young baseball and football players will get the chance to learn from two professionals who have brought not only great talent, but leadership, heart and dedication to their careers. And in the Showcase, the stars of tomorrow get their opportunity to show college and professional scouts what they offer."
Daulton, a three-time All-Star who played with the Phillies for 14 years and then retired from the Florida Marlins after winning a World Series Championship in 1997, will open his camp on Sunday, August 3, 2008. Three and one-half days of instruction will follow, with special guest instructors that include Larry Christenson, starting pitcher for the 1980 World Champion Phillies. Phillies Left Fielder Pat Burrell and others from professional baseball have been invited to camp to share their experiences with the campers.
Leonard was an All-American and record-holder as a member of the Rutgers University Scarlet Knights where he contributed to the team's 11 wins in 2006, tying a school record and assisting Rutgers to finish with its best season-ending national poll ranking, finishing No. 12 in both Associated Press Poll and Coaches Poll. He was drafted by the Rams in the second round (52nd overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft and made starts at both running back and fullback in his rookie season. The Brian Leonard Football Camp will open on July 16, 2008 and run through July 20, and will feature current NFL players as guest instructors.
The Camps are open to young athletes entering grades one through 12; the Showcase is open to athletes entering grades 9 through 12.
