LAS VEGAS, NV, September 16, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Todd Swanson, Las Vegas (http://www.DORF.US), and his partners at Desert Orthopaedic Research Foundation (DORF) are launching their fall 2009 Fund Raiser. Dr. Swanson is the Director of DORF which was founded to do research and studies that would benefit patients with hip and knee disorders. Since its inception in the early 1990's, DORF studies have provided improvements and advancements in the Orthopaedic field. A phone bank has been created to take donations. Donors can also contribute by visiting http://www.firstgiving.com/DORF.

DORF has been instrumental in many research projects which have resulted in high impact benefits for Orthopaedic patients including Dr. Swanson's breakthrough work on the Mini-incision Total Hip procedure which was initially funded by DORF in 1997. Since then, Dr. Swanson has performed more than 3,000 of these procedures, published the favorable results of his first 1,000 cases http://www.minitotalhip.com/webpages/SwansonJArth2005abstract.pdf, and continues to teach the procedure to other surgeons around the world and refine the procedure with the development of new instruments and surgical modifications.

For the thousands who face hip replacement each year, the mini-total hip replacement is a big benefit. The smaller incision and procedure leads to faster healing time and less pain, not to mention a much smaller scar.

"I spend my days and nights working with Orthopaedic patients doing hip and knee surgeries. I see what challenges my patients face and DORF has allowed us to do something more for them, such as being able to study the squeaky ceramic hip problem and isolate one of its causes," says Dr. Swanson. "As all the research and studies are privately funded, we have no vested interest with prostheses manufacturers, which removes all bias from our studies. We are able to go in the direction the research takes us and report the honest, unbiased results. From this position, we have been able to take our findings to manufactures and other physicians to help create a positive change for the patient," concludes Swanson.

Dr. Swanson and his partners at DORF go the extra mile for Orthopaedic patients turning patient challenges and difficulties into improved health care.
There are several research projects currently underway which need support. They include: Validation of a new surgical technique to reduce the dislocation risk in mini-total hip replacements. Development of better instrumentation to balance knee ligaments after Mini-incision Total Knee Replacement, in order to reduce long-term pain and sensations of knee instability. Determination of the accuracy of digital radiographs [x-rays] vs. standard radiographs for pre-operative planning for total hip replacement. And validation of a radiographic method to ensure equal leg lengths after total hip replacement.
