VIENNA, October 29, 2008 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Usually you won't find them on the same side: hackers and security specialists who fend off their attacks. Yet the security conference DeepSec, which takes place from November 11 to 14, is one of the rare events they have joined forces for. "Despite what is generally believed, hackers are not necessarily criminals. Many have made it their goal to point out potentially dangerous security leaks that need to be closed as soon as possible in everyone's interest," says Ren Pfeiffer who organises the conference.

One recent example is the attack on Estonia which was cut off from its Internet access for two weeks after a coordinated hacker attack. The incident resulted in several billion euros of losses to the economy. Also, the booming wireless networks create increasingly easy access for spies to lay their hands on data. Finally, the attack on the private bank account of French president Nicolas Sarkozy has shown clearly how vulnerable seemingly secure banking systems are.

DeepSec takes place in Vienna for the second time now and is set on creating a conference for hackers, companies, IT security staff and scientists as a forum to exchange information and experience. "We are a neutral platform that closes the usually existing gap between reseachers, businesses, authorities and the hacker community," says Pfeiffer.

DeepSec has invited the top brass of the community: keynote speakers will be Adam Laurie, a renowned specialist for hacking into RFID radio systems, Ivan Krstić, former security director of the "One Laptop Per Child" project, and Johnny Long, who specialises in low-tech hacking, i.e. hacking with minimum technical means. Gadi Evron, a well-reputed Israeli security
expert, contributes his knowledge about the cyber attacks on Estonia and Georgia to the programme.

Tickets for the conference and the workshop can be ordered on the web site:
