LOS ANGELES, CA, April 03, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- More than half of all Americans drink wine at least periodically. In 2016, we drank about 3 gallons per person, and much of that was enjoyed by people under the age of 40. When enjoyed in moderation, wine can improve cardiovascular and gut health and raise the body's levels of omega-3 fatty acids. Torrance dentist, Dr. Robert Mondavi, Torrance dentist, comments on the new study that shows the effects of red wine on teeth.

Many wine drinkers have noticed that wine can leave a film or stain on their teeth. While this can be daunting, it is not necessarily a reason to eliminate wine from the diet. In fact, according to this study, which was published in the "Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry" and reported by Medical News Today, red wine might just help protect your teeth from cavities and gum disease.

Wine is filled with polyphenols, which combat free radicals. Once they reach the gut, they can alter the microbiome, defeating some of the bad bacteria that could affect the body negatively. While researchers do not yet understand the underlying mechanisms responsible for wine's effect on oral health, they theorize that polyphenols attack bad bacteria in the mouth, too.

If you choose to indulge in wine, remember to stick with safe serving sizes, which are better for both your body and your brain. You can guard against staining by pairing your wine with cheese, which is full of enamel-building calcium and can prevent the acids in wine from sinking into teeth. Brush your teeth after drinking, and consider periodic whitening as needed.
