PERSHORE, ENGLAND, February 18, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Our Epilepsy Awareness training is designed to familiarise staff with the causes, triggers and treatment of the condition and has been described by delegates as 'very informative and enjoyable'. It is suitable for staff that are new to epilepsy care as well as serving as a useful refresher for more experienced carers. The course has been developed to follow the guidelines provided by the Joint Epilepsy Council and has links to Skills for Care Common Induction Standards and S/VQ level 2.

The course begins by defining what epilepsy essentially is before going on to outline the causes of the condition and the common triggers for a seizure. It also explains the process of diagnosis. Seizures themselves are then covered in more depth, with the trainer discussing different types and also raising awareness of other medical conditions that can lead to seizures.

Delegates are taught how to manage seizures and the process of maintaining a seizure diary for a patient. It also covers medication, and can include a practical lesson in the administration of certain medicines used in the treatment of epilepsy to ensure that all staff members are competent in this area. Towards the end of the course, focus moves from the physical symptoms of epilepsy to concentrate on psychological issues that are associated with the condition. Overall, this is an in-depth and instructive training course that can enhance a carer's knowledge or, as one recent attendee commented, it is "accessible and thorough - it demystified epilepsy."

One of our trainers, Alison Davis-Thorley, who comes from a nursing background and regularly delivers Epilepsy Awareness training, says: "Delegates on the epilepsy course frequently comment on how interesting they found the training. I delivered a course recently and was told by a delegate afterwards how enlightening it had been for them to discover that epilepsy is a condition, and not an illness. When it comes to training more experienced staff, such as nurses, they always find that it is a great refresher and are pleased with the content of the course."

Tina Wilson, Learning & Development Office Manager at Dimensions, one of the largest learning disability specialists in England and Wales, adds: "I have always been really impressed with the service-specific training that is provided. The team are always happy to come to a client's home to train the whole staff team - something that has truly been a great benefit for staff in our organisation. By training the whole staff team together it enables the course to be so much more specific to the needs of the people we support."

Epilepsy Awareness training is 2-4 hours in duration and costs from GBP255 + VAT to train up to 12 delegates at your venue. Please call us on 0800 310 2300, e-mail info@firstresponsetraining.com or visit http://www.firstresponsetraining.com for further information.
