February 09, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Approximately 1.7 million people sustain a traumatic brain injury every year throughout the United States, including Florida. Although victims may make a full recovery from less severe traumatic brain injuries, brain injury is one of the most common causes of accidental death and permanent disability.

However, there are certain measures that can be taken to reduce the risk of traumatic brain injury. In addition, legal claims often arise in the wake of a brain injury, meaning that with the help of an Orlando traumatic brain injury lawyer, victims may be able to recover the compensation they need to return to a more normal life.

Causes of Traumatic Brain Injury

Traumatic brain injury, or TBI, results from a violent impact to the head or an object piercing the skull and entering the brain. The severity of TBIs can vary widely, from mild concussions that present minimal health risks, to widespread brain damage that causes disability or death.

By far the most common cause of TBIs is automobile accidents -- more than 50 percent of all reported traumatic brain injuries are the result of motor vehicle crashes. During a car accident, the skull may impact a fixture in the automobile like the steering wheel or windshield, a loose object could strike the victim, or, in some instances, the sheer force of the crash can cause the brain to forcefully collide with the interior of the skull, resulting in a TBI. After car accidents, firearms and falls are the leading causes of TBIs.

Preventing Traumatic Brain Injury

Accidents happen, and sometimes there is nothing a victim could have done differently to avoid a TBI. But, there are some safety tips that can at least reduce the risk of suffering a TBI.

First and foremost, you should always wear a seat belt when you are in a motor vehicle (children should also be properly restrained in an age-appropriate safety seat or booster). Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and when operating an unrestrained vehicle (like a motorcycle, bicycle or scooter), you should wear a helmet.

Wearing a helmet in the course of contact sports, horseback riding, skateboarding and similar activities can also prevent TBIs. Using rails on stairways, removing obstacles from walking paths and ensuring adequate lighting on walkways can lower the risk of fall-related TBIs. And, although most TBIs from firearms are the fruits of intentional assaults rather than accidental discharges, practicing good gun safety techniques is highly recommended.

TBI Legal Claims

Despite taking every precaution, victims may still suffer due to the negligence of another. This is especially true in motor vehicle accidents, when a driver's intoxication, inattention to the road or oversight of any kind can lead to lifetime consequences for those injured.

If you or a loved one has suffered a traumatic brain injury, you may be entitled to monetary recovery from responsible parties. Contact a personal injury lawyer today to explore your legal options.
