Triton Awarded Key US Patent Broadly Protecting its Fiber Reinforced Aluminum FRA Composites

Underpins company plan to expand commercialization and definitive manufacturing relationships

FRA Composites is a lightweight and high performance alternative to aluminum alloys, low alloy steels, including hardened or carburized steel, titanium, and other structural or wear-resistant alloys.

CHELMSFORD, MA, July 27, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Triton Systems Inc., (Triton) announced today that the US Patent and Trademark Office has granted U.S. Patent No. 9,375,783 in recognition of Triton's core technology in FRA Composites products titled "discontinuous short fiber preform and fiber-reinforced aluminum billet and methods of manufacturing the same." This patent validates and protects the processing technology Triton has developed over more than a decade to produce finely tuned fiber-reinforced metal products for a variety of demanding defense, aerospace, industrial, and vehicle applications.

Triton's FRA Composites fiber-reinforced aluminum is a lightweight and high performance alternative to aluminum alloys, low alloy steels, including hardened or carburized steel, titanium, and other structural or wear-resistant alloys. Under demanding operating conditions, the FRA Composites product is twice the strength of common aluminum alloys, moving it into the realm of titanium components -- but at reduced cost.

FRA Composites products afford a wide array of capabilities for a range of applications. Because it exhibits excellent wear resistance, is lightweight and has elevated temperature strength, it is an ideal material for high performance engine and airframe components such as bushings, bearing liners, heat exchangers, actuators and pump housings. Target markets include military aerospace (fixed wing aircraft, helicopters, tilt rotor, UAVs and combat vehicles) and commercial (motorsport, heavy truck, and industrial), where high strength, reduced weight, or enhanced wear resistance properties are required.

According to Ms. Karin Karg, the principal inventor and Director for Triton's FRA Composites operations, "Our patent covers the key technologies that enable us to provide our current customers with a high value, lightweight alternative to conventional structural metals in our initial target markets such as helicopter wear applications. This is a major milestone for us, and we are pleased that the USPTO recognizes both the value and uniqueness of our FRA technology."

"The breadth of the allowed claims and the depth with which our FRA Composites technology is described in this patent, underpins the core of our FRA business and helps to propel this business to new heights," noted Ross Haghighat, Chairman and CEO of Triton. "It also shows the company's ongoing commitment to incubate and commercialize novel technologies that have a real value in the marketplace. FRA Composites offers tremendous opportunities to be a game-changer for its lightweight, wear resistance and reduced costs over heavier metals."
