IRVINE, CA, October 09, 2009
/24-7PressRelease/ -- The University of California, Irvine Extension is pleased to announce the 15th annual "Sneak Previews with Michael Berlin" film series. With the success of the Newport Beach Film Festival and one of the highest box office sales, Orange County has gained a reputation as a hot spot for film releases. The series will screen exclusive, advance previews of upcoming Hollywood movies before they are released to the general public—and this year, a featured film stars one of Hollywood's most eligible bachelor's. Held six-consecutive Monday evenings, Nov. 2 to Dec. 7 from 6:45-9:45 p.m., "Sneak Previews" will take place at a new venue, The Lido Regency Theater in Newport Beach, Calif.
"Each year we've seen an increase in participants, to the point where we eventually had to turn people away," explained Kirwan Rockefeller, director of arts, humanities and social sciences at UC Irvine Extension. "We hope our new venue will more than accommodate each and every person who wants to join. The move to The Lido Theater will also enhance the movie experience—the 1938 historic, refurbished theater has a brand new sound system and updated decor, creating the ultimate screening venue."
Previous "Sneak Previews with Michael Berlin" have included both Academy Award -winning and nominated movies such as Slumdog Millionaire, Juno, Atonement, Kinsey and Hotel Rwanda. Each engagement is accompanied by interviews and open Q&A sessions with producers, directors, screenwriters and other entertainment industry leaders. However, the titles of the films and the names of the guest speakers remain under wraps until the night of the screening—that's part of the evening's excitement and fun.
"This year the Newport Beach Film Festival will be a much bigger partner with UC Irvine and Sneak Previews," shared Gregg Schwenk, executive director and CEO of the Newport Beach Film Festival. "It just made sense to further our partnership—our audience is their audience. By joining forces, Orange County residents will be able to enjoy an enriched theater experience—going beyond watching the movie, learning about the process directly from those who create, develop and produce the films."
Each session will be hosted by Dr. Michael Berlin, who has a long list of screenwriting and producing credits to his name. Berlin, formerly an Associate Professor of Screenwriting and Film at California State University, Long Beach has a three-decade career as a screenwriter and producer. He has written feature films including "Anguish," "Breaking Point" and "Robo-Warriors" and for TV series including Miami Vice, Cagney & Lacey, Murder She Wrote, Diagnosis:Murder, Sisters, The Commish, Jake and the Fatman, Hunter, Missing Persons, The Exile, UNSUB, Earth: Final Conflict, and The Outer Limits.
We're giving film aficionados and the general public a rare opportunity to stand in a celebrity or film critic's shoes by attending previews for major and independent upcoming films," Berlin explained. "The true beauty of this film series is that it's not blockbusters. UC Irvine Extension and I have worked hard to secure movies from across all genres and budgets—independent, documentaries, foreign and big-budget films."
Other co-sponsors of Sneak Previews include the Orange County Jewish Film Festival, sponsored by University Synagogue and The Irvine Company.
General admission is $150 for the series or $75 for UC Irvine students. To learn more about UC Irvine Extension's "Sneak Previews with Michael Berlin" film series or to register visit http://unex.uci.edu/.
