UKAUS Pty: Is Australia Falling Behind When it Comes to Entrepreneurial Education?

A recent report has suggested that compared to the rest of the world, Australia is lagging behind when it comes to entrepreneurial education. Sales and marketing firm and supporters of entrepreneurship, UKAUS Pty have investigated these claims.

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, December 02, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- UKAUS Pty have offered their advice to the country's budding entrepreneurs.

A report published by outgoing chief scientist, Ian Chubb (released at the end of October), stated that Australia needs to become known as "an entrepreneurial country, not a lucky one." Chubb has expressed that for this to become a reality, and entrepreneurial activity in the country to flourish, there should be a link between university funding and the number of start-ups created by staff and graduates.

The report, written by an innovation consultant, after being commissioned by Prof Ian Chubb, suggested that the entrepreneurial education on offer by most of Australia's universities is relatively immature in comparison to global standards.

Entrepreneurship is becoming a popular career choice for many and the report has highlighted the shortcomings of entrepreneurial education on offer in Australia. The report calls for an increased emphasis on funding and support for start-ups created by staff and graduates. "Incentives linked to funding would also encourage universities to recognise academic staff for engagement in student entrepreneurship activities," said Colin Kinner, director of Spike Innovation, a consulting firm.

Entrepreneurial education programs are a relatively new concept and there isn't a particular blueprint to be followed. The report stated that when staff get involved with student entrepreneurship, it is often done as an unfunded activity or a labour of love project. "Australia needs to become known as an entrepreneurial country, not a lucky one," Kinner writes.

Chubb believes that universities are pivotal in encouraging entrepreneurship, and that schools should also help shift mind-sets and assist those who want to pursue an entrepreneurial career path. "From the United States to Korea, fostering entrepreneurs has become a national priority, pursued with energy, ambition and imagination," Chubb said.

At UKAUS Pty they believe that there needs to be more help on offer for Australia's entrepreneurs. "There aren't structured educational programs for those who want to pursue an entrepreneurial ambition. Often it is the school of life that teaches entrepreneurs how to become business owners. I believe companies and schools need to invest time and money in nurturing those with an entrepreneurial spirit," said MD Colin Moore at UKAUS Pty.
