Mike Dagne and Al Bell decided four years ago to put their combined 50 years of retail experience to work for themselves with Moochie & Co., a specialty retail concept for dogs, cats and their owners. The company is opening its tenth store Friday in the Summit Mall in Akron, Ohio.
"I describe Moochie & Co. as a Pottery Barn for dogs and cats," explained Dagne. "Everything in the store will be cool, sophisticated and fun, but none of it will be completely frivolous or exceedingly pricey. Our product mix emphasizes style, quality and function."
Most of the products offered at Moochie & Co. are specifically for dogs and cats. The store will also offer a large variety of products for
pet owners, including home decor products. "We offer everything from stylish collars and classy dog dishes, to toys and T-shirts for both pets and their people," Dagne said.
One of the most unique product offerings at Moochie & Co. will be their exclusive line of all-natural dog treats.
"All of the
Moochie Treats have sold quite well. The Peanut Butter Moochies did great, but so did the Cheddar Wedgies and Carob Chip Oh-Boys," said Dagne. "We have four flavors for dogs, and will continue to add new flavors."
Moochie & Co. will donate 25 to a local animal shelter, humane society, or pet rescue from the sale of each bag of Moochie & Co. treats. "Obviously, we help pet owners improve the lives of their pets with the products we sell, but it's even more important that we help those dogs and cats who don't have caring guardians. This is our chance to help," Dagne said of the
charitable donation program.
Dagne is using his past experience with Limited Too, Sears, Casual Corner and May Co. to create a unique shopping experience for what he believes to be an untapped audience. Bell was Vice Chairman & Chief Administrative Officer for Big Lots, and KB Toys, and as CEO is in charge of operations.
"People love their pets, but there are a lot people out there who would rather their house not look like it was overrun by their dogs and cats," explained Bell. "We have really focused on products you can feel good about taking into your home, whether it's something for your dog, your cat, you or your home."
Moochie and Co. also offers a lot of great gifts to give to those people who have everything. "I can imagine bringing over a
gift basket of Moochie Treats instead of wine or flowers when going to someone's home for dinner," Bell said. "We all know people who simply love their dogs or cats, and here's our chance to give them something personal and unique, that both the person and the pet will truly appreciate."
"There's a little Moochie in every dog," Dagne said about the fictional namesake of the company. "We believe that we've captured that playful personality, and it permeates every aspect of our store and brand. This new store even features a play area for dogs!"
