/24-7PressRelease/ -- The US Green Card Lottery also called the Diversity Lottery for 2008 is approaching its conclusion. For many people, this is the only option of entering the United States on a permanent basis. For others, it is just one of the many options. However, if people want to take advantage of this program, they have only precious hours to do so as the Green Card Lottery ends.
The Green Card Lottery allows Green Cards for up to 55,000 people from countries that are under-represented. The Green Card Lottery is random, as contrasted to its inception, which was based on a first-come, first-served basis. Under the old Lottery system, firms would time postal vehicles and traffic lights in an effort to be one of the first chosen; the new system is much easier in the sense of its randomness, however no special efforts can be made to stand out. The biggest problem people have is simply providing all the required information so that a valid entry can be submitted. For the current lottery, called DV-2010, these countries do not qualify: Brazil, Canada, China (mainland born), El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Pakistan, Philippines, Peru, Poland, South Korea, United Kingdom (except for Northern Ireland) and its dependent territories, and Vietnam. Persons born in Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR, and Taiwan are eligible for this Lottery. Eligibility of a country is determined by whether it has sent more than 50,000 immigrants to the US in the past five hears. Russia returned to the eligible list this year, and Kosovo has been added to the list as well.
To enter the Green Card Lottery, a person must be a native from a qualifying country. Most people are born in a qualifying country. However, there are other ways of qualifying and they are all listed in our blog articles. For example, one could claim their spouse's country of birth, or through a parent's country of birth. Also, the entrant has to meet the education or work experience requirements. The person must have a high school education or equivalent or two years of work experience in the last 5 years in an occupation that requires two years of training or experience to perform. A photograph must be submitted for the entrant, his or her spouse, and each unmarried child under 21. There are many details that must be followed to avoid disqualification and it is best to read the many regulations very carefully.
Entries are submitted electronically and must arrive before noon Eastern Time (GMT-5), Monday, December 1st, 2008; paper entries are not acceptable. This means that if you have not applied yet, you can still apply and you are not disadvantaged for applying at the last minute.
