/24-7PressRelease/ - ST. JOHN, US VIRGIN ISLANDS, July 15, 2008 - The US Virgin Islands offers a large number of tour companies for customers to choose from. To stand out in the St Thomas and St John tourist market Sail Safaris has come up with a unique idea for boat tours. Small groups on small boats.
Rather than the typical model of loading large numbers of guests onto larger and larger vessels, Sail Safaris has gone the other way. Offering 18' performance sailing catamarans that take no more than four to five guests. Guests get to explore out of the way locations in small groups that the larger tour companies avoid. Personal attention and unique locations are a great bonus for guests but create a challenge for the company. Owner, Han Winogrond, explains,
"We wanted to offer our guests a unique, nature based experience as an alternative to the big cruises. But we quickly learned there is an economy of scale in this business and we had to figure out how to make money while keeping groups small"
Rather than raise prices, which have remained the same since they opened, they cut expenses instead. Low maintenance sailboats, with no engines keep operating costs low. The work is fun so there are always guides eager to work. And by not maintaining a storefront in the high rent commercial area of Cruz Bay, Sail Safaris is able to keep groups small and prices low. According to Winogrond their business model is working.
"People seem thrilled with our unique tours. Getting to explore places off the beaten path in a small group with a knowledgeable guide means people come back year after year and refer their friends. We are kind of a secret, word of mouth operation."
