The answer, in part, is to harness the powers of the World Wide Web to draw current and prospective travelers.
"It's a different market today than it was 10 years ago," said Grand Strand Vacations owner Nancy Seddinger. "As a leading rental firm in the area, we knew it was time to get creative with how we get visitors. This will help us stay on top."
The firm rolled out an elaborate social network campaign toward the latter half of 2009. So far, so good. Thousands of people already have become fans, followers and contacts on Grand Strand's Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn accounts. Moreover, the agency's blog - along with a popular video on YouTube - serves as a weekly springboard for new client relationships.
Statistics show more people turn to the online arena for travel assistance. According to the National Leisure Travel Monitor, 66 percent of leisure travelers exclusively use the Internet when mapping out a vacation. Moreover, The Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project found that 47 percent of Internet users regularly log on to social networking sites.
"The Web and travel planning naturally are a good marriage," Seddinger said. "It only made sense to boost our online presence by establishing a strong foothold in the social network scene."
With the company's online momentum snowballing, it proves even coastal-based businesses can freeze out the fiscal lull now affecting many industries.
"Being heavily involved in all these networks affords us many new opportunities," Seddinger said.
"We can quickly get the word out about our specials, showcase new rental properties and deliver information on North Myrtle Beach news and events. It gives our clients exposure to their favorite getaway, even when they can't be right here with us."
