Valentine's Midlife Crisis- When Good Chocolate Goes Bad

Putting the sense of humour back into women having a midlife crisis.

VANCOUVER, BC, February 10, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Women in their forties, even those who have adoring husbands, can suddenly find themselves knee-deep in a midlife crisis that has them re-examining themselves, their marriage and their love for their families. Author Lindy Hughes chose to address her crisis with humour.

"I knew I was having a crisis, but I also knew that buying a shiny new car wasn't going to fix it. Instead, I decided to chronicle some of my adventures in a humorous way, because really, when you go through something like this you have to laugh at some point, or you will go off the deep end," says Hughes.

Non-fiction tends to focus on the serious aspects of coping with crises, but in Lindy's novel, It Never Stays in Vegas, her crazy character Lucy's response to her midlife madness is receiving accolades from women everywhere.

"Maybe men should think twice about handing their spouse a chocolate heart or a bunch of flowers on Valentine's Day. Maybe they should sit down and ask them 'Are you happy? Do you have any urges to see old boyfriends or go on any secret trips to Vegas?' Your marriage might be the better for it," says Hughes.

Here are some clues that might help you determine if your spouse is going through a midlife crisis.

1. If the Valentine's Day chocolates, flowers, and dinner sends your spouse screaming "Is this all there is?" she might be having a midlife crisis.

2. If you notice that the inside of your house has suddenly been painted a radically different colour, that's probably a clue that something's not quite right.

3. If she starts spending the grocery money on Tarot readers and psychics, she may be searching for something more.

4. If you ask her what her fantasy is and she answers "to walk into the bathroom and see a clean sink, one tube of toothpaste with its cap on and no razors anywhere" get ready for an almighty meltdown.

5. If she purchases an electric drill and a tool belt, it may already be too late, but persevere anyway. You never can tell with a midlife crisis. That's what makes it so much fun!
