Varadraj Gurupur, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Assistant professor in the department of health management and informatics at the University of Central Florida (UCF), Dr. Gurupur has focused much of his research on software engineering decision support systems for healthcare and education. Joining the faculty in 2014, he formerly taught at Louisiana Tech University and Texas Agricultural and Mechanical University-Commerce, and was an information systems specialist II and data processing specialist at The University of Alabama at Birmingham. He has also taught outside the United States. Over the past three years at UCF, Dr. Gurupur has taught several courses, including Healthcare Informatics for Healthcare Leaders, System Analysis and Design, Health Science Research Methods, Healthcare Data Architecture and Modeling, Health Information Management Systems, and Fundamentals of Health Information Technology. He also taught Issues in the Health Professions in the department of industry engineering and management systems.

Some of Dr. Gurupur's research interests include decision support systems and healthcare, semantic web technology, software engineering healthcare information systems, artificial intelligence in healthcare, and education enhancement systems. Responsible for the invention of the data completeness algorithm, representing processes as concepts, the development of artificial intelligence-based student learning evaluation, and the invention of a concept map-based personal health information system, Dr. Gurupur is currently involved with discovering innovative solutions to difficult problems associated with electronic health records. He presently holds two patents in his field.

During his tenure, Dr. Gurupur has contributed more than 85 publications to his field, including journal articles, conference papers, and abstracts, has published reviews, and edited books and book chapters. He has also served as an ad hoc reviewer and guest editor for multiple publications. Some of his articles have been published in such journals as the Health Informatics Journal, the Journal of Medical Systems, the Expert Systems with Applications, and the Transactions on Learning Technologies. He has sat on numerous committees and boards, most recently including the research incentive award committee for the College of Health and Public Affairs at UCF since 2016, and the faculty search committee since 2017. Furthermore, he has received funding for five research programs since 2007 of over $1.2 million and has also received four grants from various organizations.

A member of the Florida Health Information Management Association, where he was the recipient of an Associate Literature Award in 2016, the American Health Information Management Association, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Dr. Gurupur is also a lifetime member, next generation leader, and a Leadership Award recipient of the Society for Design and Process Science in 2011. Recently, he received a Triumph Award for Research granted by the American Health Information Management Association in 2017.

Dr. Gurupur holds a Bachelor of Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering from Mangalore University, an MS in Computer and Information Sciences from The University of Alabama at Birmingham, and a PhD in Computer Engineering from The University of Alabama at Birmingham. When Dr. Gurupur isn't busy working, he enjoys traveling with his wife and daughter and reading Roman history books.
