Vickie L. Sell
Cambridge Who’s Who
/Cambridge Who's Who/ - CHATSWORTH, GA, August 07, 2007 -
Vickie L. Sell, a second generation
Forest Service employee who followed a different path than her father and became the first female law enforcement officer for the Forest Service in the South has been named the
Cambridge Who's Who Professional of the Year in
law enforcement in the South. While inclusion in
Cambridge Who's Who is an honor, only two males and two females in each discipline are named the
Cambridge Who's Who Professional of the Year. The
Cambridge Who's Who selection committee hand picks these special
Who's Who honorees based on their accomplishments, academic achievement, leadership and service.
After graduating from Dekalb Community College with an associates degree in forestry in 1980, Sell decided to combine her knowledge of forestry with a career in law enforcement. "My father worked for the Forest Service for 30 years and was well respected by his peers. It made sense to follow in his footsteps. Being female didn't deter me and I am proud to uphold the tradition of the Sell name in this industry," she said. The
Forest Service is an agency of the
U.S. Department of Agriculture that manages 193 million acres of
public lands in
national forests and
grasslands.
In 1996, Sell was awarded the
Barriers to Bridges Award for being the first female law enforcement officer for the Forest Service in the Southeastern region. She was the first female officer to patrol on marijuana details in the South and received certificates of commendation for her participation in the 'Siege of 87' wildfires and the 1989 western fire season. In addition, she has been lauded for her service to the community and was named an outstanding young woman of accomplishment in 1987. Sell, a member of the
Georgia Sheriff's Association, the
Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association and the
International Association of Women Police, plans to retire in 2008 after 27 years of service.
