Virginia Personal Injury Law Firm Stresses the Importance of Not Drinking and Driving during the Holidays

Law enforcement agencies begin nationwide crackdown on drunk driving via Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign

Our firm has seen so many people in our community suffer life-changing injuries and even death due to the carelessness of a drunk driver, which is why we believe it is so important to speak up.

NORFOLK, VA, December 15, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will launch its annual Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign Wednesday, and police departments, community organizations and other groups throughout the country are beginning to raise awareness of the dangers of driving while intoxicated this holiday season.

The personal injury law firm of Kalfus & Nachman has long advocated on behalf of the victims of drunk driving, and attorneys at the practice double their efforts during the holidays to discourage drivers from getting behind the wheel after drinking alcohol.

"Drunk driving accidents increase significantly during the holidays," said Paul Hernandez, an attorney with Kalfus & Nachman. "Our firm has seen so many people in our community suffer life-changing injuries and even death due to the carelessness of a drunk driver, which is why we believe it is so important to speak up."

The NHTSA has announced that the theme for this year's holiday campaign against drunk driving will rest on two basic principles:

- Social norming: Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving
- Enforcement: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over

Getting "buzzed" is drinking enough alcohol to impair safe driving without necessarily being over the legal limit. This year, the NHTSA is striving to raise awareness of the dangers of drinking any amount of alcohol and operating a vehicle.

The Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign is hosted several times throughout the year to coincide with holidays where excessive alcohol consumption makes the roads more dangerous.

According to NHTSA data for December 2013 - the most recent enforcement period with available data - more than 700 people nationwide were killed in accidents involving a drunk driver.

Hernandez said that vigilance is the best way to stay safe this holiday season.

"The holidays are the time for office parties and family get-togethers, but don't let 'Christmas cheer' get your guard down," he said. "Be mindful of what you drink and how much, and always enlist a designated driver."
