Vitamin C Founder Albert Szent-Gyorgyi Celebrated by Google

Today is the 118th birth anniversary of much revered - and Nobel prize-winning - Hungarian physiologist Albert Szent-Gyorgyi.

LONDON, ENGLAND, September 18, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- As well as being active as part of the resistance during the second World War and a politician after that, Szent-Gyorgi was credited with discovering Vitamin C and the benefits of Vitamin C...the sharp-eyed of those amongst you may have noticed that today's "Google Doodle" (i.e. the design of the Google logo on the Google home page) has a rather 'citrussy' feel to it.

In 1927 Szent-Gyorgyi was credited with discovering and isolating an organic acid which could help prevent scurvy. A few years later, in the early 1930s, Szent-Gyorgyi and his research partner, Joseph Svirbely found that this organic acid was in fact Vitamin C...or to give it its true chemical name "L-Ascorbic Acid".

Sailors, who would spend long periods at sea with little or poor nutrition, would often suffer with scurvy and to help avoid this dreaded disease they were given sacks of citrus fruits to nourish themselves with during their journey...in fact it's why the British are often called 'limeys' by former colonies where British sailors would often turn up chomping on these Vitamin C-rich fruits and other Vitamin C foods. They knew at the time that limes were good for them, but they didn't know why.

In the years that have passed, Vitamin C has gone on to be used to not only prevent scurvy (a now rare disease) but as a general booster for the immune system, especially to help in the prevention of colds and flu. If you're looking for a little immune boost of your own - which is especially important at this time of year with the cold weather coming in and the kids now back at school where colds and flus seem to fester - then why not take a look at Chewable Vitamin C 500mg, Slow Release Vitamin C 500mg or Vitamin C & Zinc.
