W. Timothy Liu, PhD, Recognized for Excellence in Atmospheric Sciences

Dr. Liu serves as a senior research scientist with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory



Drawing upon nearly four decades of professional experience, Dr. Liu is a widely regarded principal investigator in the area of satellite oceanography.

    ARCADIA, CA, January 29, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- W. Timothy Liu, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Drawing upon nearly four decades of professional experience, Dr. Liu is a widely regarded principal investigator in the area of satellite oceanography. At the present moment, he serves as a senior research scientist with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and as a senior advisor with the Hong Kong Observatory. Since the inception of his career, Dr. Liu has been involved with three NASA flight projects as the Project Scientist. He is also recognized as the former team leader of the Air-Sea Interaction and Climate Team. A respected voice in his field of expertise, Dr. Liu has contributed 167 articles to professional journals, as well as numerous chapters to books.

In recognition of his contributions to the field of scientific research, Dr. Liu was recently named a senior member of the IEEE in 2013. This title is reserved for the top 8 percent of membership. Since 2012, Dr. Liu has served as a distinguished visiting professor with the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School. He has been named a fellow of the American Geophysical Union, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and American Meteorological Society. Dr. Liu previously received a Verner E. Suomi Award from the American Meteorological Society, Space System Award from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and Distinguished Science Award from the Pan Oceanic Remote Sensing Association. In addition, he has received a NASA Exceptional Achievement Medal and NASA Medal for Exceptional Scientific Achievement.

Early in his career, Dr. Liu received a Bachelor of Science in physics, summa cum laude, from Ohio University in 1971. He subsequently attended the University of Washington, where he completed a Master of Science in atmospheric sciences in 1974, and PhD in atmospheric sciences in 1978. During this time, Dr. Liu served as a teaching assistant and research associate with the university. He briefly served as an honorary guest professor with the Ocean University of China in 1996. Since joining the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Dr. Liu has served as a science leader and spokesman with the Seawinds Project and Quikscat Project.

In an effort to remain alert of recent developments in his fields of expertise, Dr. Liu maintains involvement with a wide range of scientific organizations, including the American Meteorological Society, American Geophysical Union, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and IEEE.
