Walking Boots Recommended for Icy Conditions

Fitness Footwear urges people to wear appropriate walking boots following snow and ice warnings by the Met Office.

WOOLMER GREEN, ENGLAND, December 23, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Sports and outdoors specialist Fitness Footwear is urging people to wear appropriate footwear throughout the Christmas period.

This comes after the Met Office issued snow and ice warnings as temperatures plummeted below freezing across the UK.

Pete Sloss, a forecaster from the Met Office said: "There's more rain within the showers, but what's happening is, because the ground is still frozen solid, that rain is hitting the ground and freezing on impact."

The Met Office is urging the public to exercise caution when walking or driving to work and that people should only travel if absolutely necessary.

But Herts based sports and outdoors specialist Fitness Footwear suggests that it's always safe to venture outside so long as the correct footwear is being worn.

"People can't just sit indoors because it's icy outside, especially with Christmas just days away," said Company Director Emma Barlow, "So we're recommending that people wear good pair of walking boots to get them safely through the winter."

Historically the week before Christmas has always been a mad rush for last minute gifts and groceries, and with food sales at an all-time high, more people then ever will be braving the cold conditions this year.

Walking boots are designed to not only offer warmth and support, but also a versatile grip for all manner of outdoor terrain. Their chunky treads and strong grip makes them ideal for trudging through deep snow or walking on ice.

For years walking boots have been developed with ever more advanced Vibram outsoles to prevent slipping in mud or on wet moss, so they provide an equally impressive level of grip on ice.

"Don't sit indoors" urged Fitness Footwear, "get out there, take in the winter landscape and go into work or go shopping. Staying safe and wearing the correct footwear is a simple solution to prevent slipping up."

It's a sensible message that comes at an especially busy time of year for everyone when following the Met Office's advice to stay inside isn't as practical as it would normally be.
