SAN DIEGO, CA December 04, 2009
/24-7PressRelease/ -- Waste Management of North County (WMNC) hosted a "Shadow Day" for nearly 20 students and 10 adults at its Oceanside location. Students from Reggie Steward Ministries, based in North San Diego, and United Latin American Citizens, the oldest Latino organization in the U.S., were invited to spend the day learning about the daily operations of one of North County's leading trash collection and recycling businesses.
"Shadow Day was a great opportunity to inform energetic students about our commitment to the environment and zero waste, as well as the many types of eco-jobs available at Waste Management," said Ken Ryan, District Manager of WMNC. "Being a part of the growing green workforce is one of the most exciting and rewarding career choices available today. With increasing consumer consciousness about recycling and going green, the long-term job prospects are strong and incredibly diverse."
The Shadow Day began with a continental breakfast followed by an escorted tour of the facility including the training room, office, dispatch, main yard, exchange yard and recycling center.
After the tour, students were introduced to WMNC staff who explained their roles within the company. After a hosted lunch, students had the opportunity to "shadow" a staff member to discover more about the diverse aspects of the job. At the conclusion of Shadow Day, students met back in the training room where they shared their favorite experiences with WM staff members.
"Today I learned that Waste Management does much more than picking up and recycling trash," said DeAnjelo Santiago, a student from Reggie Steward Ministries. "There are so many different aspects of this industry and I am happy that I had the opportunity to learn how much goes into this business."
