WattNow Electrical Engineering Magazine Interviews ALGAE-X International Rep to Discuss Diesel Fuel Contamination
WattNow reports that 85% of engine failures in gensets are fuel related, yet most preventive service procedures exclude testing fuel integrity. Regularly replacing the stored fuel on which these generators rely does not fix the problem.

FORT MYERS, FL, February 05, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- In WattNow's article "Contaminated Diesel Fuel Poses a Serious Risk in Standby Generators," ALGAE-X International (AXI) representative Ron Mattig, MD of Clear Fuel Technologies, South Africa, discusses the crucial and often neglected element of reliable generator operations, poor diesel fuel quality.

"It's a known fact that in Southern Africa, the quality of diesel fuel is questionable at best, but the situation with standby generators is exacerbated because of their infrequent usage. Standard maintenance procedures generally exclude testing and resolving fuel integrity, yet fuel is the root cause of most genset failures," said Mattig.

WattNow reports that 85% of engine failures in gensets are fuel related, posing a severe risk to reliable operations. Fuel tanks are a perfect environment for contaminants including sludge that clogs filters and injectors resulting in engine damage and generator failure. Injection systems and pumps have very tight tolerances and operate at extremely high pressures. These systems are critical and demand high quality fuel to comply with the specification of the engine manufacturer. Regularly replacing the stored fuel these generators rely on does not fix the problem because contaminants remain on tank walls and baffles, contaminating all of the new fuel that is stored in the tank.

Mattig presented these facts recently to the Durban Branch of the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE), saying afterward that the presentation was an eye opener for the attendees.

Mattig's company, Clear Fuel Technologies, supplies AXI Fuel Conditioning Systems and fuel decontamination services through a network of South African distributors. Solutions include on-site tank cleaning with AXI's advanced technology that extracts water, debris and contaminants while simultaneously conditioning the fuel in place to reverse the deterioration processes that occur in diesel fuel. Clear Fuel Technologies, offers AXI's maintenance and monitoring systems that continually condition fuel, ensuring the pristine quality needed by today's advanced gensets.
