It was in 1972 that Mr. Vernon began his long and fruitful relationship as a correspondent for CBS Radio Stations News Service, based in Washington, D.C. He spent the next 25 years on the air, reporting on various national and regional news stories as well as Democratic and Republican conventions. Some of his top stories over the years covered the Nixon presidency and Watergate scandal, the Iranian hostage crisis, the attempted assassination of President Reagan, and the collapse of the Soviet Union. From 1975 to 1997, Mr. Vernon was a host for CBS Crosstalk in addition to being a news correspondent.
