What Are Invisalign Attachments?

Invisalign Attachments Explained

EAGAN, MN, January 11, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Patients and orthodontist love Invisalign for its ease of use when straightening smiles. The clear aligners the system uses are comfortable and removable, allowing for patients to go about their everyday lives with minimal interference.

But sometimes, a patient's bite cannot be corrected with the aligners alone. That's you're your orthodontist will recommend Invisalign attachments to provide the ideal bite.

"In some cases, the aligners alone just can't achieve the ideal tooth movement," says Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth, a Minnesota orthodontist. "Align Technology, creator of Invisalign, realized this so they created special attachments to help patients' teeth move in the proper way, allowing more patients to experience the benefits of Invisalign."

If you need an attachment, it will be placed directly on the teeth in a way that will allow for the ideal tooth movement. Tooth colored resin will temporarily bond the attachment to the tooth, making it as inconspicuous as possible. The attachments look like tiny bumps, and are located at strategic places on the tooth to provide an anchor point to help direct the force for the aligner to effectively move the tooth.

The enamel-colored attachments stick to your teeth much in the same way brackets for traditional braces would, and then click into the aligners to ensure efficient tooth movement. But unlike traditional braces, these will be hard to detect so you won't have to worry about people noticing that you're in orthodontic treatment.

If you require attachments, you'll most likely need them for the duration of your treatment. And it is important to remember that these buttons are an important part of your treatment plan. Some teeth need the anchor power the attachment can provide to either rotate or protrude from the gum the right way, or to move to its new location. Invisalign treatment is a wonderful advance in the orthodontic world, and the ability to use attachments opens the treatment up to many other patients who otherwise wouldn't be ideal Invisalign candidates.

If you have any questions about Invisalign treatment or when attachments may be needed, don't hesitate to speak with your orthodontist and care team.
