ANCHORAGE, AK, May 09, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Healthy People 2020 is a national society that strives to improve the health and wellness of our nation's people. In 2010, the society set forth a 10-year agenda with a number of goals, including improved stats for oral health per state. In Alaska, there are three areas that focus on children's oral health:

- Dental caries experience in children
- Untreated caries in children
- Children who have received dental sealants

For the 2020 initiative, there is a target goal for Alaska that is based off of recent numbers. Here are Alaska's oral health stats and 2020 goals for children ages 6-8 (taken from a 2010-2011 survey):

- 62 percent of third grade children have experienced dental decay - target of 2020 is only 49.0 percent
- 24 percent have untreated caries - this met the target of 2020 with 25.9 percent
- 47 percent of children have received dental sealant on permanent first molar teeth - met 2020 target of 28.1 percent

While many goals are being met and maintained, Alaska, among other states, has a long way to go to battle cavities, since dental decay remains the most common chronic disease of childhood.

You can't always monitor your child's actions. They will fall down, get into things he/she shouldn't and eat what he/she isn't supposed to. That's the life of a parent, and life gets hectic, so it becomes even harder to keep an eye on his/her oral hygiene regiment. You can teach your child how to brush and floss, but you can't watch him/her every morning and night.

While you are responsible for your child, he/she is responsible for the condition of his/ her teeth and gums. In time, you can only hope brushing and flossing becomes second nature to him/her. For younger children, parents can help protect their kids' teeth by letting them get dental sealants placed and visiting a childrens dentist. In Anchorage, residents can keep their children's teeth in check with annual exams at Whole Family Dental, practice of family and childrens dentists, Drs. Edwin Kim and Lee.
