/24-7PressRelease/ -- It's no secret that the institution of marriage is facing challenging times. Some studies show that up to fifty percent of marriages end in divorce, and a number of Americans are choosing to stay single. And even the definition of marriage is under debate.
Despite these bumps in the road, the covenant of marriage is here for the long haul, continuing to provide much needed stability in a less than stable world. Atlanta counselor and author, Barbara Peters, RN, LPC, NCC, is confident that marriage can and will endure the test of time, and she is just weeks away from publishing her book on this tried-and-true institution, titled The Gift of a Lifetime: Building a Marriage That Lasts, available on Amazon.com (www.amazon.com) in late December.
In the book, Peters introduces readers to a formula that has never been suggested before with regard to building, growing and keeping a marriage healthy and long-lasting. She calls it "F.A.C.T.S." and walks readers through what each letter in this powerful acronym can do to strengthen and solidify a marriage. The F.A.C.T.S. are then complemented by "F.A.I.T.H." another acronym that reveals additional techniques for strengthening one's marriage.
"Because of the passion I hold for the covenant of marriage, my own life experiences and my background in counseling married couples and families, I felt compelled to write this book in hopes of reaffirming the institution and helping all married couples strengthen their marital bond," explains Peters. She uses a variety of her own case studies throughout the book to illustrate her formula for success.
"Marriage is actually healthy for you, if you want to approach the matter from a different perspective. Married people live longer than single and divorced people, and studies show that married couples are typically better off financially, too," comments Peters. And according to a study Peters references in her book, by Stack and Eshleman, titled "Marital Status and Happiness: A 17-Nation Study" (1998), marriage positively impacts an individual's life. The study concludes that "married persons have a significantly higher level of happiness than persons who are not married. This effect was independent of financial and health-oriented protections offered by marriage."
According to Peters, marriage is a psychological journey that begins with attraction, travels through a course of self-discovery, and culminates in a satisfying lifelong union. It is forever changing as we are in constant growth while we travel life's fluid path. "Marriage is not about finding the perfect mate, but about working on yourself to become the perfect mate for the spouse you have chosen," she advises.
