Why Is the Publishing Industry Keeping a Watchful Eye on Milton Stern?

And, he accomplished all of the above while holding down three jobs.
"I wrote a screenplay 20 years ago, called 'The Girls' that I have now developed into a novel," Stern says. "'On Tuesdays, They Played Mah Jongg' (ISBN 1-4116-5229-0, http://www.mahjongg.us) takes place in the present and flashes back to one fateful year as the main character, Michael Bern, a gay Hollywood television writer, goes through therapy to resolve some issues that involved his mother and her four closest friends."
The story takes place in Newport News, Virginia, where Stern was born and raised. "Some may read 'On Tuesdays, They Played Mah Jongg' and think the story is real," Stern says. "But as I say in the book, 'This is fiction, none of it happened ... but it could have.'"
Earlier this year, Stern also released the first extensive biography of the most admired woman in nineteenth century America, "Harriet Lane, America's First Lady" (ISBN 1-4116-2608-7, http://www.harrietlane.net).
"I was researching the life of her uncle, Bachelor President James Buchanan for 'America's Bachelor President and the First Lady' (ISBN 1-4137-2908-8), when one of the folks at Wheatland in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, suggested I write a biography of Harriet Lane, who was responsible for the Pediatrics and Teaching Hospital at Johns Hopkins University, St. Albans School in Washington, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, among countless other charities and institutions," Stern says. "And, she was the first woman to be called First Lady," Stern adds.
He has given numerous lectures, presentations and tours in relation to the lives of First Lady Harriet Lane and President James Buchanan. In November, Stern gave a lecture at Wheatland, and it was so well received that the Director of the President James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland said, "It was a pleasure to have met you ... I have been hearing so much about you ... from Board members and volunteers alike. I would like to invite you back to speak again."
However, it is Stern's monthly magazine "SelfPublisher News" (www.selfpublishernews.com) that is gaining him notoriety in the publishing industry. Launched in August 2005, "SelfPublisher News" has highlighted over 75 authors and reviewed dozens of books.
"Our aim is to highlight those authors, who rather than spend their days sending out queries, actually write," Stern says. "Some of our writers have been picked up by traditional publishing houses as a result of our magazine."
